Sclerotherapy

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is injection of varicose veins with a chemical irritant or sclerosant, which irritates the lining of the vein. In response the veins collapse, shut down and subsequently reabsorbed by the body. A very small needle is used for injecting the veins. Ultrasound will be used for guidance during sclerotherapy for deeper varicose veins for accuracy and best results.

What are the outcomes?

Sclerotherapy is very effective if performed by trained vascular physician. Usually veins disappear permanently without leaving scars. Sometimes larger veins needed to be injected more than once for permanent closure. Pain, bruises and pigmentation are usually temporary.

How many sclerotherapy treatments do I need?

It depends on number of varicose veins you have to start with. Typically 3-6 sessions (each session lasts for 10 minutes and over weekly intervals) are required for complete treatment.

Do I need to wear compression stockings during treatment?

It is advisable to wear compression stockings for at least 4-6 weeks for good clinical results.

Do my insurance company cover sclerotherapy treatment?

Majority of times sclerotherapy is covered by the insurance companies. However proper documentation by a vascular expert is recommended to avoid payment denials.
