Sclerotherapy is injection of varicose veins with a chemical irritant or sclerosant, which irritates the lining of the vein. In response the veins collapse, shut down and subsequently reabsorbed by the body. A very small needle is used for injecting the veins. Ultrasound will be used for guidance during sclerotherapy for deeper varicose veins for accuracy and best results.
Sclerotherapy is very effective if performed by trained vascular physician. Usually veins disappear permanently without leaving scars. Sometimes larger veins needed to be injected more than once for permanent closure. Pain, bruises and pigmentation are usually temporary.
It depends on number of varicose veins you have to start with. Typically 3-6 sessions (each session lasts for 10 minutes and over a 1 week interval) are required for complete treatment.
It is advisable to wear compression stockings for at least 4-6 weeks for good clinical results.
Majority of times sclerotherapy is covered by the insurance companies. However proper documentation by a vascular expert is recommended to avoid payment denials.
